SDAT

An SDAT is a hand-held audio-tape playing device, typically worn with headphones. Shinji Ikari frequently puts his SDAT headphones on and plays loud music, to try to shut himself off from the world. Asuka has also been seen using one.

Note
There is a real-world audio device called "DAT", short for "Digital Audio Device". "SDAT" presumably stands for "Super Digital Audio Device", a more advanced version of DAT that exists by 2015. DAT players never really caught on in North America, so North American viewers might not at first glance understand that Shinji's SDAT player is supposed to be a more advanced version of a present-day audio-player.
