That makes perfect sense...If Gendo was willing to end the human race as we know it just to see his wife again, I guess that's the date he would naturally pick for Rei...

Rei's birthday is officially unknown. The Yui tidbit was intended to show that 3/30 belongs to Yui and not Rei.

Perhaps Anno followed the Japanese's traditional age counting system where a child's age is added on each New Year’s Day rather than on his/her birthday. Shinji being born on 2001/06/06 and Asuka on 2001/12/04 would make them both 14 year olds for the duration of the entire series set in 2015. Working it out:

At the turn of each of the following years,
2002 - 1 year old
2003 - 2 years old
2004 - 3 years old
2005 - 4 years old
2006 - 5 years old
2007 - 6 years old
2008 - 7 years old
2009 - 8 years old
2010 - 9 years old
2011 - 10 years old
2012 - 11 years old
2013 - 12 years old
2014 - 13 years old
2015 - 14 years old

They might have, but that is the age counting system before the Meiji restoration. I highly doubt he would use it in a future setting.

Asuka TURNS 14 during the series at some point

Episode 9 occurred on September 11, 2015.....but the later episodes of the series probably extend into December, so she's 14 by the end of the story

I don't really see this as a continuity error: they "rounded up" a little, but she's still, genericly, "14 years old" broadly speaking.

I don't really think this is that important of an issue.
