Neon Genesis Evangelion:
S² Works Appendix

This here is a transliteration and translation of pages 5~11 from the S² Works booklet. As a bonus, I've attempted to correct all of the typos appearing in the original booklet (of which there are many); the mistakes are left intact in the left-hand column and are fixed in the right-hand one (with asterisks and, sometimes, endnotes alerting you to the presence of my Amending Hand). And, just for fun, I've included screenshots (00) from every scene in the anime listed in the appendix (well, most of them, at least)! Click on the e ("picture") kanji -- -- following each scene's entry to take a look. (N.B. When 4 or 5 screenshots are included for a particular scene, they are in manga order -- left to right, top to bottom. Here's an example.)

· Music used in REBIRTH that recurs in Episode #25' is unified under Episode #25'. (0)

TRANSLATION NOTES

A few random things:
• Even though shito literally translates to "apostle" or "disciple", I translation it as "angel" (since this is the "official" English equivalent for shito in the NGE universe; gawd -- or, rather, Anno -- knows why).
• The Roman spellings of the angels' names in my translation are official. (Though I still wonder where on Earth they got "Matarael" from...) The ones that you see in a lot of subtitles and random other translations are, well, incorrect.
• I translate the Evas' Japanese spoken designations (Shogouki, Zerogouki, etc.) to "EVA-##", since this is how the Evas' appellations appear in Japanese printed materials whenever the kanji versions are not used. ("Unit-##" is, far as I know, a dub/subtitle creation, and I never use it because I hate the way it sounds. I'm weird like that.)

00: Props go to Michael Wiseman for providing most of the screenshots. He's been a great sport and taken hundreds of captures (from his own "Renewal" DVD Boxset ::slobber::) according to my "exacting specifications" (i.e., I sent him the "crap versions" of what I wanted, and he gave me the "pretty Renewal versions"). The remainder are from the NGE Collector's Discs -- I don't own them personally, but the beautiful, expanded screenshots included on them are literally all over the Internet. All images have been scaled down to 50% here, since that's as big as they need to be for our purposes. If you want any of the original JPEGs, though, just drop me a line.

0: Some confusing notation here... In this appendix, the last two TV episodes are called dai nijuugo wa ("Episode #25") and saishuu wa ("Last Episode"), respectively. The movie episodes -- which are thought of as "updated" or alternate versions of the last two TV episodes -- are here called dai 25 wa and dai 26 wa, with Arabic numerals rather than kanji. This poses a problem in the translated column, since nijuugo and 25 obviously come out to the same thing. Ergo, wherever the movie episodes are mentioned, I "translate" 25 and 26 to 25' and 26' (the latter being how the episodes are actually referred in the movie eyecatches). Note the little ', as this makes all the difference in the world -- this is shorthand for kai, a kanji suffix that means "updated", "modified", or "revamped". You may often see the new production cut episodes (see further down) referred to as 21', 22', 23', or 24'. [As an aside, this notation is also used to differentiate between the two "models" of EVA-00 (yellow-orange is plain old 00, blue with shoulder pylons is 00'.]

1: Yes, "hedgehog" is misspelled in the original title. Also, I had been under the impression that harunezumi was "hedgehog" and yama'arashi was "porcupine", not the other way around -- but, hey, Anno must know better than the likes of Dr. Eggman (who, I believe, refers to his blue adversary as a harunezumi in the Japanese dialogue of "Sonic Adventure").

1.5: That's Gendou, not Kaji's dad. Hate it when English is stupid like this.

2: This is guesswork, really; I couldn't find gekihaku (or however the kanji are pronounced) anywhere.

2.5: A usage not mentioned in the original booklet, but I thought I'd include it anyway.

3: This is the first of many instances where the appendix lists the incorrect episode number; it actually says "#22" in the original Japanese! I correct these errors in my translation, but I designate such instances with an asterisk following the episode number (as mentioned earlier).

4: This BGM is actually used for two different scenes in the same episode. The appendix lists both under the same bullet, but separates them with a sizeable gap, which I opt to "translate" into a semicolon.

4.15: This time, they didn't put the right scene description under the right song with the wrong episode notation -- they put it under the WRONG song! The song that plays in this scene is definitely D-7 and NOT B-19; I checked both ADV's domestic release and the AVI I have of the "Renewal" version. Stupidly enough, the false notation is repeated on page one of "Eva tomo no kai" #13 (one of the Renewal Box Set pack-ins).

4.2: Another typo -- this usage of "DECISIVE BATTLE" is easily found in DEATH(TRUE)² (the "final" version of "DEATH", which is what Manga Entertainment brought to U.S. shores -- although they didn't get "REBIRTH"...).

4.25: Actually used three times in Episode #06, even though the appendix only lists two separate scenes.

4.5: In other words, the BGM plays for the second half of the scene.

5: They neglected to mention whether this item is shoshuuroku (which, BTW, basically means that this album is the first time a given piece of music has been published) or not, though I would guess that it is.

6: Eh? What's that supposed to mean? Perhaps, for the 30-second-long video and LD versions of the previews, either the regular F-2 or the "light" F-2 are used. I don't have the video (the Japanese video release, mind you) or LD versions handy, so I have no idea. The ADV release has the 30-second previews up to a certain episode, so perhaps I'll check those.

7: They don't call Naoko by name in the appendix -- odd. And this isn't really a translation note, but rather a small rant: MISINFORMATION! That was no accident Yui had in 2004! That was "everything going according to plan" (as far as Yui was concerned, anyway); so what if Naoko thought she was responsible for it? ;;>

8: Eh, what's this? Unused BGM that was actually released prior to S2 Works?!

9: I have no idea why saishuukai was used here instead of saishuu wa. For that matter, why is saishuu wa ("Last Episode") used instead of, say, dai nijuuroku wa ("Episode #26") to begin with?

10: Very odd... How'd they manage to put the first scene from episode #23 using "THANATOS" under "Episode #13"?!

11: The shin, or "new", is actually short for shinsaku KATTO, or "new production cut". This is the official name for the modified and new scenes added to the Japanese video release versions of episodes #21~#24, though they are most often called (by the English-speaking crowd) the "Director's Cut" or "Retake" episodes. (The former is a misnomer if I ever heard one...)

12: I haven't been able to find this ZAKAZAKA anywhere. At least, not in any context that would help me here. In web searches, I've only been able to find it being used as a proper noun (at least, I think so).

13: The verb makasu means "to entrust, to leave to a person". From what I can find, omakase is commonly used in the context of sushi, as in "chef's choice: asking the sushi chef to choose what you'll have next" (see here). In a more general sense, it can mean "leaving it to <someone>", as in, "Leave it to me!" How on Earth does that apply to music, though?! Tentatively, I'm translating it as "choice", here in the sense of an adjective (like, "choice meats" and what have you).

14: Very, very odd -- the scene description was placed under "M-3 SUITE" instead of "Munashiki nagare" itself! Talk about your blatant boo-boos. As for my poor EVA-02's fate... "ravage" only begins to describe it. >::|
