3.0 + 1.0 bad news…and a little good

Bad news first, Khara has announced on twitter that 3.0 + 1.0 would be delayed due to the worsening pandemic conditions in Japan, with no indication of when it would be released again. The official statement released on the Khara’s Evangelion website included the announcement that the release of Shiro Sagisu’s soundtrack, originally scheduled for February 10, would be delayed too.

Notice of postponement of release of “Shin Evangelion Movie Version

First of all, I would like to express my deepest sympathies to all the victims of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19). We would also like to express our gratitude and respect to the medical professionals and their stakeholders who are still responding.

We have taken seriously the situation of the spread of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19) and the issuance of a state of emergency by the Japanese government, and have carefully considered it. As a result, we decided that the convergence of the spread of infection was the highest priority, and we refrained from releasing “Shin Evangelion Theatrical Version”, which was proceeding toward Saturday, January 23, 2021, and decided to postpone it again. In addition, we are carefully considering the time when you can enjoy this work with peace of mind on the new release date.

We sincerely apologize to everyone who is looking forward to it, and we apologize for the inconvenience. As soon as it is decided, we will inform you about the future release schedule on the “Evangelion” official website and official SNS. In addition, please keep the Mubichike card you have in a safe place as it can be used even after it has been postponed.

Due to this postponement of release, “Shiro SAGISU Music from” SHIN EVANGELION “”, which was scheduled to be released on February 10 (Wednesday) as a music collection CD of this work, will also be postponed. We will inform you of the new release date after considering it as soon as the release date is decided.

Thank you for your understanding.

I think I can voice everyone’s immense frustration by saying “NOT AGAIN!” because we were all expecting to see the movie released in less than 10 days’ time. At the same time, this isn’t exactly surprising or unexpected, given Japan’s worsening coronavirus emergency.

As for the good news in the thread title? We can be happy with the fact that the movie is entirely complete, and can be released on far shorter notice than was previously possible. Hope it comes out soon.

3.0 + 1.0 merchandise out on January 8

3.0 + 1.0 theatrical merchandise will begin to be released on January 8 at select theaters.

Courtesy of Khara’s official twitter account, again –

Some of the genuinely spoiler-filled merchandise, such as the 80-page pamphlet accompanying the movie and containing production drawings and cast interviews, is not going to be available until the 23rd of January. It seems reasonable to infer that the merchandise being released at this point will spoil little, if anything, beyond that seen in pre-release trailers.

Thanks to SailorStarDust for letting us know and Joseki for correcting a misunderstanding about the merchandise being released on the 8th.

3.0 + 1.0 XMas trailer with “One Last Kiss”

Khara wishes us all “Merry XMas” by giving us a new 3.0 + 1.0 trailer for Christmas Eve (Christmas Day in Japan) featuring Utada’s “One Last Kiss”. Watch it below.

Khara’s Merry XMas trailer and tweet. Thanks for the heads-up, Gendo’s Papa!

Additionally, they’ve got a new poster for 3.0 + 1.0 up, but that’s small potatoes compared to the trailer. A full breakdown of the trailer will probably take some time to come, it’s dense enough. Feel free to discuss it in here.

UPDATE: It’s been brought up in the thread that Redditor u/ToBeFrozen has put up every shot of the new trailer on the Evangelion Reddit. Feel free to go over and soak in those gorgeous details!

Like Khara says, Merry XMas, folks!

Back-to-back screenings, US release, Khara’s spoiler warning

The social media thread is heating up and we also have news of back-to-back screenings of Evangelion 3.333 and 3.0 + 1.0 . From the official Evangelion website we have a schedule showing both regular and IMAX screenings of both movies.

The left column shows back-to-back screenings of Evangelion 3.333 and 3.0+1.0 in IMAX, the central one in regular theaters, and the right column shows 3.0 + 1.0 screenings only. Thanks to user IntermediateO for the heads-up.

Courtesy of user Tajai in the social media thread, we’ve also heard from Yusuke Matsui (The CGI director for 3.0 + 1.0) saying they’re working on arrangements for the safe showing of the movie in US theaters. An international release may not be far away!

Top it all, Studio Khara issued a warning on twitter asking fans to mute social media if they want to stay spoiler-free. Since 3.0 + 1.0 has apparently been screened to people who besides Staff, random spoilers on social media are likely to turn up.

We wish you folks happy holidays (Or Merry Christmas/ Happy Hannukah/Kwanzaa if you prefer it that way). Hope you stay safe and spoiler-free!

Daicon III Animation Discovered on 8mm Film!

Via the ever-awesome FreakyFilmFan4Ever – FemboyFilms announced on Twitter that they found an 8mm film print of the Daicon III Animation and are doing a color restoration of the film!

For those not in the know, in 1981 young to-be Gainax creators Hideaki Anno, Hiroyuki Yamaga and Takami Akai got together to create the insanely detailed and animated opening animation for the Daicon III Science Fiction convention, making it a historic work for Hideaki Anno and the first true OVA.

The tweet below shows their first attempt at dirt and scratch removal. We hope to see this historical treasure in its original glory soon!

Evangelion 3.333 IMAX release on January 8

Evangelion 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo (note the extra 3) will get an IMAX run on January 8, 2021. This release is in full 2K, with some extra changes from 3.33.

A short explanation of this new Evangelion IMAX release is available on the Khara website. The translation is as follows –

2018 “EVANGELION: 3.33” 2K conversion project started in earnest. In producing “Shin Evangelion Theatrical Version”, the environment inside the studio color photography department was raised, and under the full supervision of Director Hideaki Anno, all cuts were re-photographed in 2K full size. Different from “: 3.0” and “: 3.33”, higher-definition images that could not be expressed at that time were realized.
The IMAX® screening will maximize the appeal of the further evolved “Q: 3.333”, which has undergone some retakes along with the re-shooting.
A commentary article by Ryusuke Hikawa will be published on the official website of “Evangelion” soon!

Google translate via this post by Gendo’s Papa

Thanks go to user Gendo’s Papa for the heads-up and the translation!

The changes that would go in 3.333 and speculation about a “Director’s Cut” were being noticed as far back as October and it seems that all our speculation is fully confirmed! User Joseki has put up a couple of images showing the difference between 3.33 and 3.333 – from subtle changes in color and lighting to make Rei Q’s eyes pop, to the marked changes in plugsuit coloration for both Asuka and Mari. Drop in on that thread for more interesting discussion on the changes!

As for Ryusuke Hikawa’s commentary…we’ll be sure to let everyone know what that’s about as soon as we hear more.

Oh, and there’s only another 31 days to Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0’s scheduled release!

January 8 Update: Details are limited but it appears that Evangelion 3.333’s release will be delayed due to an issue with the sound.

Arqa Apocrypha Fansite Launch

Former EGF staff member Reichu has launched a new Evangelion fansite of her own, called The Arqa Apocrypha. For those unfamiliar with Reichu, she was a key contributor to EGF on the very areas of “Evangelion Analysis, Speculation and Bricabrac” for works spanning the entire Evangelion franchise. As such, fans of Reichu’s work can look forward to the same in-depth analysis and speculation as before.

Although the site is still very new, articles like her analysis of Trailer 3 of 3.0 + 1.0, the Secrets of the Ayanami Series (Part I and Part II), and the meaning behind 3.0 + 1.0 hint at oodles more to come. We wish Reichu the best and look forward to a lot of delightfully in-depth content to come!

Rebuild of Evangelion on Amazon Prime Dec 18

Evangelion 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 are coming to Amazon Prime Video. No word on whether it is meant to be restricted to Japan alone or if it is meant to be available worldwide. Since its release date is only December 18, we’re going to find out very soon!

It’s been a busy week for Shin Eva news on twitter. Courtesy of the good folks on the social media thread we’ve been keeping an eye on the stuff coming out of Khara’s official twitter accounts.

Among choice bits from a couple of days ago, Shiro Sagisu’s score for Shin Eva is set to release on February 10, 2021, the link for the pre-orders is in the tweets below.

There has been more good news, namely that all shooting and editing work for Shin Eva is finally complete.

There has also been some discussion about the structure of the movie beginning here that should prove…interesting. Head over to that thread yourself and toss in your two cents!

Shin Eva theme song pre-orders start today!

Hikaru Utada’s new song “One Last Kiss” has been selected as the theme song for Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 and iTunes pre-orders begin today!

This information comes courtesy of the official Evangelion website, which includes the pre-orders links.

Via Google Translate, the text on the official website reads as follows –

“One Last Kiss” is the theme song of “Shin Evangelion Theatrical Version”, which is the latest and final version of the series by Hikaru Utada, who has provided songs for all the works of the “Evangelion New Theatrical Version” series. This is a newly written song.

In addition, to commemorate the completion of the series, an EP containing all the related songs of Hikaru Utada provided in the previous “Evangelion New Theatrical Version” will be released! In addition, a CD jacket featuring the main character Shinji and an LP jacket featuring Ray are also released today. It is designed with the original picture actually used in “Shin Evangelion Theatrical Version”.

The site specifies that deliveries by download/subscription start on January 24, 2021. The EP will be released on January 27, 2021, containing the theme songs for all four Rebuild of Evangelion movies along with Utada’s rendition of “Fly Me to the Moon”, the original intro trailer song.

This is huge news for fans of Evangelion’s music, of Hikaru Utada, and of Evangelion in particular – and yet another reminder that the Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 is coming out next month!
