Have you been keeping track? The gold medal for "Most Overused Music in NGE" hereby goes to "E-1 rhythm only [Spending Time in Preparation]" for a whopping 16 occurrences. "E-6 [ANGEL ATTACK]" isn't too far behind at 13, with "E-7 [MARKING TIME, WAITING FOR DEATH]" taking third place with 11. Though, if we were judging by the number of times a particular theme recurs, you can probably guess who'd win. ;;p

NOTES

N.B. Determining the usage of "Jikai yokoku" and "FLY ME TO THE MOON" is tricky, since different versions of both songs are used for different episodes in different releases of "NGE" (the original Japanese TV airing, the original video release, the Renewal DVD-Box, etc.). For me to determine this definitively on my own is impossible, since, as I said above, the only versions of the TV series I have handy are the original ADV DVDs and AVIs of Renewal (sans the original versions of episodes 21~24). From what I understand, the ADV (pre-Platinum) episodes correspond to the Japanese video release for episodes 01~20, while the rest are the original TV-aired versions; for now, the songs used in these episodes are treated as the "default". When the Renewal usages differ from the "default", I will label them as "Renewal", save for episodes #21'~#24', which I'll label as "NPC" (for "New Production Cut" -- I don't have any earlier issues of the NPC episodes for comparison, so I'll assume that the Renewal version maintains the original video release usages).

For those of you who can't make heads or tails of the above paragraph, here's a summary: Basically, some of the information compiled here regarding the different versions of "Jikai yokoku" and "FLY ME TO THE MOON" is tentative, and I'd definitely appreciate help from anyone who has access to more versions of the series than I.

* Songs like these that are used on a regular per-episode basis don't require an entry repetition for every episode. You know they're there. ::> Also, regarding the chronological order of Jikai yokoku and FMTTM, it seems to be flipflopped between the original release and Renewal: In the original, the preview comes first and the credits follow, while it's vice versa with Renewal. If this observation is wrong in any way, please let me know.

(2) Now this is quite interesting... On ADV's DVD release of "NGE", the ED is always the same, blue FMTTM. The DVDs were the first place I was able to see FMTTM, since the VHS bootlegs originally shown to me always had the ending edited out. Suffice to say, I was surprised when I downloaded AVIs of "Renewal" and found that the endings of #08 and #09 were tinted red (no doubt because they're Asuka's debut episodes) and #19's was in grayscale (with funky pink telop). As it turns out, these changes were not made for Renewal -- it's just ADV being stupid. There's more info here, though, oddly, they don't mention #09 at all. (BTW, in addition to the other non-blue ED versions, the Renewal DVD credits -- which appear after those of Episode #26 -- use an orange-hued version.)

(3) Here, "DEATH(TRUE)^²" is treated as the "default" version of "DEATH", since it's the only one I have available for reference (assuming that's what Manga Entertainment released, which does seem to be the case). If the S^² Works appendix is any indication, most of the music between the various versions of "DEATH" is the same, anyway; the original "DEATH" just has a couple of songs that the others don't, which are designated by ["DEATH" only] here.

(4) From the scene using footage from Episode #04 of Shinji on the train listening to his S-DAT. The song does not seem to be either of the two used in the original scene ("Aoi LEGEND" and "You are the only one"). If you know what this song is or can identity it from the recording (MP3) I made, I'd be much obliged.

(5) These two songs cannot be found in the domestic (i.e., U.S.) release of "DEATH & REBIRTH" -- ^{they're in the original release of "DEATH", which, MDWigs tells me, is "really hard to talk about ... because, unless you saw it in the cinema or have a bootleg copy of it, you can't see it". I don't have access to the original "DEATH", nor do I know anyone else who does, so, at the moment, these two songs (A) will not be in proper chronological order with respect to the rest of DEATH's music and (B) will not have any accompanying screenshots. Well, there is the possibility that} "Zeijaku na, jiga kyoukai" is in the right place, but I won't get into that...

(6) "REBIRTH" is being lumped under Episode #25' here, since it is, essentially, an unfinished version of the same. Music used in "REBIRTH" only is designated by [REBIRTH], music used in #25' only is designated by [#25' only], and music common to them both is unmarked. "Tamashii no RUFURAN" is the last song in "REBIRTH", so, logically, all of the songs after that have to be from #25'.

(7) Yet another unknown. This is the children's song that plays at the beginning of Episode #26''s playground scene -- sounds like it's playing off a crackling record, so it must be pretty old-school. If you know what this song is, or can identity it from the recording (MP3) I made, I'd be much obliged.
