Death Renewal ghosting (graphically intense thread)

Brought to you from land of broadbands.

(Split from The Kaworu-Katsuragi Connection Thread)

I don't like tooting my horn all that much, but there's just no way you're fanwanking your way out of this one ;)

The first thing to keep in mind is that EVERY SINGLE ONE of these screenshots is a very first or very last frame from a "shot". These have a much bigger chance of being neglected in the cleanup process, don't ask me why, they just do. If they had reused old cels, it shouldn't look this wobbly and dirty, so I guess it's because even when remastering for Renewal (and doing a great job, really) they couldn't fix it when, at the biginning and end of EVERY SINGLE SHOT, the picture is skewing and slipping in and out of the screen. See for yourself how wobbly it is.

I animated some of these as to easier locate the anomaly.

These dirty frames are at their most dirty at the fast-paced parts. The cleaners probably just lost focus by then, much like I gradually did, retracing their lapses.
This is all, of course, assuming that my theory is right. But there is a possibility that I might be wrong.

No, wait a minute... There isn't.

This is an undisputable pattern. So it's obviously established that the "Tree of Life-ghosting" is linked to these dirty frames. And seeing how some look just like it, some resemble it, and some are nothing like it, I think it's safe to submit that there's no wanking this one off as a fit of genius. Even if the first appearance it IS about the only instance were it occurs in the UPPER edge of the screen.

The last thing to keep in mind is that this was all done in one night, in one sitting, and by one pair of tired eyes, so statistics should indicate that I've probably missed at least 25% of noteworthy frames. And I only scanned two thirds of the movie.

Finally, there's something that came up while I was doing this, and I though I might ruin the mood for you too. There's a small, pubic looking piece of hair, stuck on the right side of the screen, clearly visable during a lot of the string quartet segments. You'll see it.

For further insight, here's a package with ALL the screenies I kept. (5,33MB) http://rapidshare.com/files/906582/DeathDirt.rar.html

Motherfucker! Did this thing ever take long to compose. Hope it cleared some things up.

Mmmm... Interesting.

The Shinji camel-toe is something that would confirm a lot of suspicions.

OK, I know when to surrender: the 2I TOL in Death is officially defunct, and you won't ever see me mention it again. Props to Kaysow for setting us straight...

Great Success!

Sorry if I sounded too self-righteous there.
But I DID spend 10 hours preparing this post =)

You win.

I know exactly why they can't clean those also, what you are seeing is the literal glue that holds the film together. To fix it, they'd have to digitally edit the affected frames. That's why they show up between the cuts.

Your hours well spent sir, have delivered these boards from many hundreds of hours of chasing shadows. Bravo.

This effect seems to be so pervasive, I imagine it must have a name in animation circles. Has anyone ever heard of it. The capiilary effect is certainly interesting.

It's not just animation, it's most things shot on film, especially when made under tight dead lines.

I dunno why I never thought of this though, I've seen it in my own films...

I'll probably find a way to keep it alive. But not in the way you might think.

Interesting slide show, Kaysow. I'm not sure how I missed this in my random DEATH step-framing -- I FEEL SO ASHAMED!!!! But I have noticed the wobbling in the movies, and it annoys me like mad. WHY?

Good: We lose one of the more inexplicable bits of arcana.
Bad: We lose one of our favorite justifications for microanalysis.

Not like that will stop me or anything. You know how it is.

The Reichu is alive, ooh-rah!

My guess is that the wobbling has something to do with NGE being film-based rather than digital animation; they glue pieces together and then run them through some kind of copying system. If the film-to-sprocket fit is a little loose, the image will wobble.

At least, that's what I remember. I'll have to ask my brother when he gets back from fencing, since he does a lot of work with filmstuffs.

This thread is awesome because it gets rid of unnecessary baseless theories and fanwanking trying to explain "HOLY SHIT WHY IS THE ToL THERE".

Incidentally, no amount of fanwanking I tried would really work on that one. Probably because the ToL in EoE makes absolutely no sense.

Fanwanking can work wonders on other stuff, though.

Had that been the ToL, what difference would it have made? Really.

Because in EoE, Fuyutsuki says something along the lines that the ToL has been "reformed", implying that it was already around at some point prior to EoE. Having it be involved in 2I kinda answers that, but if it's not, then it's left completely unanswered.

We don't need it anymore for that. Fuyutsuki's words are more that EVA-01 has RETURNED (as in, "returned/restored to origins / original state") to the Tree of Life, not that the ToL has been reformed by her. So we don't have any previously-existing Tree to worry about -- but his babbling still doesn't make any sense.

FRUIT OF LIFE! FRUIT OF KNOWLEDGE! GOD! RESTORED TO TREE OF LIFE! EMBRYO OF LIVES! ARKS! DEVILS! THIRD IMPACT!
